At the slightest suspicion of a serious pathology, the patient is always prescribed examinations. Today, one of the most effective diagnostic methods is magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MRI is used to study various organs and systems of the body, including the brain. In order to obtain accurate results, the procedure is carried out using a special preparation for contrasting. MRI with contrast allows you to determine the exact localization of pathological changes in the brain.
Why is an MRI of the brain performed with contrast?
The tomography works on the principle of emitting high-frequency pulses when it enters a magnetic field. The signal is captured by sensors and processed using a special computer program. The result is images with multiple slices of the region under study.
The introduction of a contrast agent enhances the degree of detail of the pathology development zone. This technique is most effective in case of suspected neoplasms, since the contrast agent accumulates more actively due to the disturbed blood-brain barrier. Thanks to this, the doctor receives the most accurate information about pathological changes and can quickly choose the tactics of treatment. Some brain diseases are diagnosed only by the results of an MRI with contrast.
Indications for examination
MRI Technologist with contrast is prescribed for:
- suspected neoplasms (benign and malignant);
- the presence of metastases of the spinal cord or brain;
- inflammatory diseases of the brain;
- violations of the work of blood vessels;
- multiple sclerosis to determine its staging;
- the presence of an undefined infection in the body;
- craniocerebral injuries;
- dizziness, frequent fainting, convulsions, headaches, decreased sensitivity of the skin.
Examination is necessary when deciding on a surgical operation on the brain, as well as during the recovery period after surgery. MRI with contrast is prescribed to patients undergoing therapy to monitor the dynamics of treatment. If necessary, tomography is carried out at regular intervals.
Contraindications and restrictions
MRI with contrast is a painless and safe examination method. The degree of negative impact on the body is minimal and does not entail serious consequences. However, there are a number of contraindications associated with exposure to radio magnetic waves. Before diagnosis, it is important to take into account the patient’s condition and the presence of certain diseases.
MRI with contrast is contraindicated in:
- violation of the kidneys;
- asthma;
- blood diseases;
- pathologies of the cardiovascular system(Noninvasive Cardiovascular Sonographer);
- mental disorders;
- thickening of the skin;
- pregnancy up to 12 weeks.
The procedure is not performed while taking drugs with beta-blockers. In addition, a contraindication is alcohol and drug intoxication, severe dehydration, the presence of metal implants, dentures, intrauterine device, permanent makeup.
Preparing for an MRI of the brain
Two days before the examination, a test for the tolerance of the contrast agent is carried out. If there is a deterioration in well-being or allergic manifestations, the procedure is contraindicated. If you have tattoos, you need to find out if there is metal in the composition of the pigment paint.
Two hours before the examination, you should refuse food and water. Immediately before the MRI, it is necessary to remove jewelry, glasses, accessories. In some cases, patients are prescribed sedatives.
To prepare for an MRI of the brain, it is important to inform your doctor of any metal in your body, such as a pacemaker or aneurysm clip, as these can affect the results of the scan. Additionally, you should remove any metal jewelry, hairpins, or clothing with metal before the scan. You may be asked to wear a hospital gown and remove any hair clips or other hair accessories. Some MRI scans require the use of a contrast agent, which is a special dye that is injected into a vein in your arm before the scan. Your doctor will tell you if this is necessary for your specific scan. It is also important to let your doctor know if you have any allergies or kidney problems, as these can affect the safety of the contrast agent.
The order of the procedure
The examination takes approximately 30 minutes. First, images are taken without contrast, then a contrast agent is injected intravenously or drip. The patient is located on the couch of the tomography, his limbs and head must be fixed. The couch moves inside the apparatus; it is important to maintain absolute immobility throughout the procedure.
Survey results
The interpretation of the results is performed by a radiologist and takes no more than half an hour. An examination protocol is drawn up by MRI tech school, the data is printed out or provided on a digital medium.
